My August

My August

Well it’s been so long since I have given a steady update to anyone but I have a bit of time in these last few days of summer. I am trying to enjoy the few relaxing days that I have left.
It has been an eventful August. I went to Aruba (as you know from my last post), and then a week after I went to Toronto to record my second recording with pianist and best bud, Jacob Sacks. This recording was a project that we have been thinking about for a long time. We went to the same studio where we recorded Soulmates and used the same engineer. This time our friend Darren came and hung out with us in the studio and gave us another set of ears to listen to the session.

Recording is such an interesting experience. I have not done too much of it but I notice that the mindset is different from performance and live recording setting. When I record, I try to perform in the same way as a gig. On Soulmates there were no overdubs or editing. I believe that when you are recording, it is a documentation of the moment. I know that there will be many folks who would argue and say that it should be the best representation of yourself. My only argument to that is that it could become more fabricated rather than a “real” representation of yourself. Don’t get me wrong, there were one or two things that I sang on the session that were more sour than sweet and I will admit now that I did two punch ins during the session. Whether I actually use them is still not decided. As I listen to the original takes I realize that it was the moment. I know that I could change it but I struggle with whether or not it is really what I want or is it really me? I am not a perfect singer, I do not have a perfect voice and I would never claim to have one. So when I listen and hear the “flaws” I start to think and say, “well, that’s me… No one else is gonna sing it that way so let everyone hear that…” Then again, do I want to cringe everytime I hear that not so great note? I don’t know yet. You will just have to see whether or not I do. Even the punch ins aren’t perfect so whatever with all of it.
Whatever it is and whatever I decide I am very pleased with the outcome and Jacob played his ass off! He is just one of the most creative musicians I have had the honour to work with and listen to. Can’t wait to see the finished product. I will keep you all posted.
